Fitness and Nutrition for Kids is Super Important!

As the parent of a child who has ADHD, I have found he is sensitive to dyes and extra sugar in his food. We try our best to get his blood pumping through play, martial arts classes and structured fitness at home. Did I say structured fitness? That means older brother assisting, walking the dogs, or standing in front of our currently favorite YouTube video.

Even though many businesses in Kitsap County cannot open yet, there are some that are able to open their doors for exercise. We have found a few places that can get kids safely in the door and moving!

Bremerton Academy of Martial Arts in Bremerton offers mixed martial arts instruction to kids – age 12 on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 5:00-6:00. If you have a teen in the house, then they can train every night! See the latest calendar for details.

• Family Martial Arts Academy on Bainbridge Island, offers in person and virtual classes. Kids can learn some basic martial arts techniques while getting their bodies moving. Owner, Rick DeMile also focuses on nutrition and the mental discipline of following through with a lesson or routine.

Kitsap Crossfit in Poulsbo has in person kids and teens classes! Teens can train: Monday/Wednesday/Friday 4:00 – 5:00pm. They are also offering a virtual PE class for kids 5-11.

• Sound Elite Athletics in Port Orchard always has tons of great recreational opportunities. During this fall season they have in-person and zoom classes offered to get your kids moving! Starting this Friday night, they are offering an open gym on a pre-register basis only so they can comply with all Covid safety procedures. Friday, 8 – 10 pm. Ages 8 and up. $15.00.
